Martineau Screened Porch - Washington, DC
NARI CotY Award Winner 2007
Before RenovationWhen the Martineau family purchased their new home, they couldn't wait to start enjoying their backyard, but the existing rear deck and second story balcony didn't allow for a cozy, protected gathering space. It also looked somewhat disconnected from the rest of the home. The family needed a screened porch to protect them from bugs and the elements while still being open to the air and the sun.
After Renovation - Exterior ViewThe finished screened porch fit all the family's needs. Removing the second story balcony creates a proportioned roof line and gives the rear elevation a more solid presence. The screens add dimension by providing a darker contrast to the white trim and the addition of lattice at the base makes the porch feel more grounded to the backyard. The new stairs and railing to the side are more in keeping with the scale of the house and welcome you to the backyard rather than the side yard. With the roof for cover and the panels at the bottom, the new screened porch has a much cozier feel than the old deck had.
Interior Views of New SpaceWe added skylights, wall sconces and a fan to lighten the space and cool it down as needed.
Now the Martineaus can gather as a family protected from sun, rain, snow, wind and even mosquitoes!
