Stone Green Kitchen - Clarksville, MD

The Stone family felt their kitchen was outdated. They wanted something more spacious and contemporary and were particularly interested in using green products wherever possible. We carefully removed all cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures and appliances from the old kitchen and donated them to two needy families. We also removed the hardwood flooring and stored it for later installation in the family's basement. We took many of the other materials to recycling facilities or set them aside for later use.
We began by installing a bay window to open up the space and let in more natural light.
We designed multiple work stations including a baking center, a prep sink and main kitchen sink made of recycled aluminum.
We added a Nu-heat heating system under slate flooring for a warm, contemporary look.
The Stone family chose a high efficiency wood-burning stove with a soapstone baking bay. We installed it on a raised slate hearth surrounded by recycled glass mosaic tile.
Forest Stewardship Council certified maple and cherry cabinets, recycled concrete and glass countertops helped give the kitchen a natural look.
The homeowner is an avid gardener, so we built a custom-sized shallow potting sink made of recycled glass.
The Stones chose a glass front cabinet to display their family heirlooms and collectibles.
A marble countertop gives light and sophistication to the new bake center.

With the kitchen now remodeled to their liking, the Stone family and their friends can gather together without feeling cramped in the kitchen. The warm, sunny space makes everyone feel welcome and the homeowners really love early morning hours spent gazing out the new bay window, watching the woods around them come to life.
As a result of this kitchen remodel, Tabor Design Build received the Grand Prize for "Green Interior Remodeling" at the NARI Capital Contractor of the Year (Coty) Awards 2008.
