John Tabor, President

Almost 40 years of experience in remodeling. John Tabor remodels homes to enhance and inspire the lives of the people who live in them. When John founded Tabor Design Build, he did so with creative design, top quality craftsmanship and unsurpassed attention to detail in mind. He understands the complexities of home construction and strives to provide each TDB client with a stress-free experience.

Knows every aspect of the remodeling / renovation business.  John was born in Scotland and has lived in Maryland since he was five years old. He has been in the remodeling industry since 1979, working his way up from laborer to lead carpenter, to president of his own company. He is personally involved in all aspects of Tabor Design Build, from the original estimate to designing the new space to managing production through to completion.

Remodeling Magazine has recognized John as one of the top 50 remodelers in the country.

Strives to maintain a high ethical standard throughout the industry.  John is a long-term member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).  He serves on the ethics committee of NARI’s Metro DC chapter, which investigates and mediates client complaints and ensures that NARI’s high standards are maintained by all its members.

A nationally recognized industry leader.  John is a long time member of Remodelers Advantage, a peer review association, comprised of hundreds of the top design build remodeling companies in the U.S.  They meet every six months to discuss new trends, review business decisions and propose solutions to obstacles within the industry.  Through his participation, John has shared best practices, techniques, and strategies with some of the nation’s top remodelers.  He uses their insights to refine his own company’s systems and practices, and applies cutting edge industry principles and practices to his work, in order to give his clients the best remodeling experience possible.

Strong educational background and distinguished educator.  John studied construction management, architectural design and structural engineering in college. He believes strongly in continuing education and provides opportunities for TDB employees and employees of other NARI members to further their knowledge and skill. John has completed NARI’s extensive Certified Remodeler Program and is certified with the Green Building Council as a Green Advantage Professional.  He teaches Certified Lead Carpenter and Certified Remodeler Classes at the TDB office.

The most important thing in John’s life is his family, wife, Tamara and twins Ian and Erica.  Ian is a future Eagle Scout who loves being outdoors and in the water.  Erica is a gymnast who regularly excels in competitions.  John relaxes by scuba diving and underwater exploration for buried treasure.

Tamara Tabor, Controller

Tamara has been keeping the Tabor Team “in the black” and profitable for more than 15 years. She holds a degree in Finance from University of Maryland and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1997. She handles all of the “number-crunching” duties – financial reporting, tax preparation, payroll, budgeting, financial forecasting, bank reconciliation and, of course, bookkeeping and accounting.

She is also responsible for all of the company’s human resource needs – ensuring that all employees are properly licensed and certified for the jobs they are performing.  In addition to her financial and accounting background, she brings invaluable experience and diversity to the Tabor Team – in real estate, property management, investments and banking.  She decided to team up with her husband and owner, John Tabor, in 2000 when they expanded their family by two.  While she admits to actually enjoy “playing with numbers”, her secret passion has always been art – and she has dabbled in drawing and painting since she was a child.

Janet Martin, Office Manager

Janet has been on the Tabor Team since 2006.  She wears a different hat on any given day – juggling between IT support and website development, shipping and receiving, pre-production, sales support and advertising, and of course, answering the many incoming calls throughout the day.  Watching her switch her attention from one task to another numerous times throughout the day – averting a crisis here, resolving a client’s issue there, is nothing short of amazing!

Janet’s calm disposition and warm-hearted smile pervades the entire office like a beacon of light in a thunderstorm, and everyone near her gets the sense that everything will work out fine just because she’s there.  Prior to her arrival at Tabor, she worked for Tektronix and then for Xerox, for 26 years.  At Tabor, she is the indispensable hub from which all activity stems from and returns to.  When the day is done, Janet still has the energy to engage in her all-time favorite pastime – spending time with her family.  Janet and her husband Barry will celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary this year.  They have two children named Nicole and Jason, a son-in-law named Carlos, and three grand children named Jorge, Aiden and Danielle.

Jane Harper, Interior Designer

Jane comes to Tabor Design Build with over 20 years’ experience in the interior design and home improvement industry. Her diverse background  includes working for interior design firms designing high-end residential interiors and running her own interior design firm. Jane has extensive knowledge of what is available in different fixtures and finishes through her work with several home improvement retailers and distributors. Working for various home improvement retailers and wholesale distributors, Jane has gained extensive knowledge and skills from working various positions, in multiple departments.

Jane specializes in kitchen and bath design where she hones her skills assessing the client’s needs and wishes and turning them into a reality. She has redesigned kitchens and bathroom floor plans for over 80 different house projects for a local home builder and designed an award winning kitchen for another local builder. Jane’s experience includes designing and project managing numerous home remodels and new construction projects, working with builders, contractors and homeowners, to define the best possible solutions for the client’s desires for their new spaces. She has degrees in interior design as well as art history and museum studies. Jane is returning full time to design after recently being a museum curator for several years. In addition, Jane is an Adjunct Professor teaching interior design at Harford Community College, instructing the next generation of interior designers. At the end of a long day, she adores going home to her two Pomeranians, Phoenix and Fiona. On weekends, she enjoys spending time with her three adult daughters and grand daughter having family dinner and game night.  Jane also enjoys going out to local venues and shopping with close friends.

Roddy Ring, Production Manager

Roddy has over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, most of which were specifically in residential remodeling.  Roddy has also worked four years building for the federal government at DHS-ICE and a couple years doing new home construction.

It is Roddy’s job to keep projects running smoothly, on time and within budget.  He works with lead carpenters and team members to ensure that all our customers are satisfied.  Roddy is married to Lisa, who is a Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Hospital and they have two boys, Ian and Lyle.  He enjoys listening to music and playing stringed instruments.

Don Thomas, Project Manager

Don has been with Tabor since 2004. He has been a NARI Certified Lead Carpenter since 2007, and has more than 20 years of carpentry experience. He excels at producing overjoyed clients.

Frank Howard, Project Manager

Frank came to Tabor, not only with 33 years of local Washington Metro area experience, but with a portfolio that includes some of the most high-end custom homes in the area.  He is most proud of his work in crafting out-of-the-ordinary accommodations for home owners with special needs in order to enhance their quality of life.

Frank is not only recognized for his unparalleled talent in devising customized solutions to building challenges on the job but off the job as well.  In his spare time, he builds remote-control race cars that have won numerous competitive racing awards.

Matthew Tyma, Project Manager

Matthew joins the Tabor Team with over thirty years of experience in the construction and remodeling industry. Having previously owned his own home improvement company, he is experienced in all aspects of residential remodeling, especially construction management. He is even an experienced electrician! Matthew has a passion for working with his hands, learning new skills and seeing every job through to the end. He is a US Navy veteran and his friendly, easy-going manner makes him a pleasure to work with.

Brian Flores, Carpenter's Helper

Brian was born in and has lived in Maryland his entire life.  He graduated from Mugruder High School.   Brian is a carpenter’s helper, who took carpentry classes for two years at Thomas Edison High School of Technology, where he was certified.  Brian’s current goal is getting his OSHA 10 certification.  He attends Montgomery College at night and is studying construction management.
